SAVVAS LEARNING

Digital Lab Update | K-8 Science

THE COMPANY

Savvas Learning Company is a next-generation learning company that combines new ideas, new ways of thinking, and new ways of interacting to create innovative learning solutions.

THE STORY

The project's primary objective was to improve the virtual lab by integrating user feedback, introducing new features, and ensuring adherence to WCAG AA standards. We encountered two initial challenges. The first was to clarify the lab completion status for users, addressing a significant source of confusion. The second challenge was to simplify the design while seamlessly integrating new features. However, the introduction of new elements, such as the language toggle and pop-up modal, presented the risk of creating a cluttered appearance.

THE ROLE

UI/UX designer tasked with incorporating user feedback into an update of a virtual lab for all Science programs.

THE PROCESS

I collaborated with the Instructional Design team to collect user feedback, particularly responding to teachers' requests for a progress bar placement at the bottom of the lab. Upon understanding their concerns, I recognized the potential for a more robust solution. I used this valuable feedback to create several prototypes, which I then presented to the Instructional Design team for their input.

After a series of iterations, I arrived at a solution that I believed was both user-friendly and visually appealing. This approach utilized checkmarks on the tabs and within the carousel circles at the bottom of the page, providing users with a clear representation of their progress without overwhelming the interface with unnecessary visual elements.

Additionally, I maintained close collaboration with the vendor development team to implement and review the new design. This phase required thorough and ongoing communication to ensure the correct execution of the design elements

THE OUTCOMES

I successfully addressed user feedback, integrated new functionality, and crafted a design that is both user-friendly and visually appealing. This redesigned interface holds the potential to significantly enhance the likelihood of educators selecting our program, as it facilitates more effective learning experiences. The finalized design encompasses the following key solutions and added features:

Ensured compliance with WCAG AA standards.

  • Introduced a language toggle for enhanced accessibility.

  • Restructured the landing page to accommodate new tools and functions.

  • Implemented a Pop-up Modal on the submit button to serve as a reminder for users to complete the task.

  • Enhanced the notebook modal tools and top bar, allowing users to position them as needed.

  • Incorporated a new checkmark system to signify progress tracking.

  • Simplified the design elements for a cleaner and more intuitive user experience.

THE REFLECTION

This project was instrumental in sharpening my skills and enabling me to apply them more effectively moving forward. I gained greater confidence in my ability to make design decisions that not only meet user needs but also align with industry standards.

Upon reflection on my first project, I realized that I should have been more proactive in seeking research insights. Doing so would have enabled me to derive my own key takeaways and ensure that the project was closely attuned to user preferences. In hindsight, I wish I had dedicated more time to researching and refining tooltips, which could have significantly improved the overall user experience.

I also gained an important appreciation for the vital role of clear communication and organization when it comes to the sharing and transfer of project files and information.
